Turkey Chili Recipe
The first time I cooked it, I was honestly skeptical whether ground turkey could be as satisfying of a substitute for traditional beef chili. But after one spoon, I was shocked. Turkey keeps it light, beans keep it filling, and tomatoes and spices create a warm, smoky flavor that makes it taste like it’s been simmering all day.
This has now become one of my easy weeknight meals when I do meal prep on Sundays and want to be cozy. This is made in one pot with simple cupboard ingredients and is even better the next day. This turkey chili is a healthier spin on traditional beef chili but is still hearty and full of flavor! Wholesome turkey, creamy beans, sweet tomatoes, and warm spices blend together for the perfect bite.
The greatest part is all of it’s cooked in one pot, which makes clean-up a breeze. Also, you can freeze it; it is budget-friendly, and it tastes good with whatever toppings you like.

Directions
- Prepare the Ingredients:
Chop the onion and bell pepper into small pieces, and mince the garlic. Drain and Rinse the kidney beans and black beans to remove excess liquid. Before you start cooking, have all the spices and other ingredients ready.
- Sauté the Vegetables:
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat 0.5 cup extra-virgin olive oil over medium-high heat; Stir in the chopped onion and bell pepper, and cook for about 5 minutes until softened and slightly translucent. Add minced garlic to the pan and cook for another minute until its fragrant.
- Mix Up the Ground Turkey:
Then add the ground turkey into the pot with the veggies. While it cooks, use a wooden spoon to crumble the meat into small chunks. Cook, continuing to stir, for an additional 6–8 minutes, or until turkey is nice and brown (no pink remains).
- Add the Seasonings:
Spread the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, oregano and salt over the thyme-cooked turkey. Mix well to coat the meat in spices; allow everything to cook for a minute so that flavors bloom!
- Add in the tomatoes and broth:
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Mix up everything until well combined and smooth and mixed through.
- Stir in the beans:
In goes the drained kidney beans and black beans. Combine so that the beans are evenly dispersed in the pot. They provide every bowl with heft, chewiness, and some extra protein.
- Simmer the Chili:
Let the chili come to a light boil, then lower the head to low. Loosely cover the pot and allow it to simmer for 30–40 minutes, stirring from time to time. This gives you the chance for flavors to meld while your chili thickens into a nice, luscious soup.
- Taste and Adjust Flavor:
Taste the chili and season if necessary after simmering. Top with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, or chilies to your taste. You may need to add a little chicken broth if the chili is too thick—use enough until you reach your preferred consistency.
- Garnish and Serve:
The hot turkey chili into bowls, and garnish with your favorites like shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, avocado slices, chopped cilantro or green onion. Serve alongside cornbread, tortilla chips, or crusty warmed bread for a full and warming feast.
Notes
- Simmer longer for a thicker, richer chili.
Add extra broth if the chili becomes too thick.
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Freeze in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
Serve with cornbread, rice, tortilla chips, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
Delicious Variations
Turkey chili is also one of the easiest tacos to customize if you want a different flavor or based on what ingredients you have available. If you want a hotter chili, toss in chopped jalapeños, more ground cayenne and/or an extra dash or two of your favorite hot sauce. For an even heartier meal, add sweet corn or stir in some diced zucchini or chopped mushrooms. You can also substitute the kidney or black beans for pinto or cannellini beans to get a slightly different texture. For a more indulgent flavor, top with shredded cheddar cheese or stir in some cream cheese before serving for an extra creamy touch. Whichever variation you go for, this recipe is delicious and filling and great for any occasion.
What to Serve This With
Turkey chili is great on its own, but there are side dishes with turkey chili to make it even better! A classic choice is warm cornbread that pairs nicely with the rich and savory chili. You can also enjoy it with some garlic bread or crusty artisan bread (or even buttery dinner rolls) for dipping into the delicious sauce. A fresh green salad or steamed veggies on the side is a great and light meal. Tortilla chips, baked potatoes, or fluffy white rice make a hearty meal even heartier if you’re feeding a crowd. Top each bowl with shredded cheese, sour cream, avocado slices, fresh cilantro or green onions for flavor and crunch.
Pro Tips for the Best Results
To make the best-tasting turkey chili, allow plenty of time to cook the onions, peppers, and garlic; they are the foundation for all your flavor. Browning the ground turkey all the way before adding your spices, coating your meat in seasonings for a deeper flavor. Let the chili simmer for at least 30 minutes so all of the flavors can meld together. Add a little chicken broth if the chili gets too thick to reach your desired consistency.
Finally, adjust the seasoning to taste before serving. Finishing with a squeeze of fresh lime juice or some chopped cilantro can accentuate flavors and give your meal the first homey touch!
